Q1. What or who is MEPIS?

A1. MEPIS LLC is a company established to better develop, promote, and support MEPIS Linux. Both were founded by Warren Woodford, a computer industry veteran.

Q2. What is Linux?

A2. Strictly speaking, Linux is an open source computer operating system invented by Linus Torvalds but often the term Linux is used generically to refer to the operating system combined with useful software applications.

For example, in common business language, MEPIS might be described as a brand and SimplyMEPIS a product model of desktop Linux. This means that it includes the operating system and software applications, assembled with great attention to design details, in order to give you an enjoyable, safe, and secure desktop computing experience.

Q3. Do you sell on eBay?

A3. As of this writing, MEPIS does not sell on eBay or on any other auction site. MEPIS sells direct only through the MEPIS Store. If someone has sold you a MEPIS CD on eBay, you have probably purchased an older version, produced from inferior materials, and distributed illegally.

Q4. Why should I buy from MEPIS?

A4. When you buy official MEPIS Linux CDs or the Download Subscription you will always get the latest best version of our products and part of the proceeds will help support the further development and improvement of MEPIS Linux. When you buy MEPIS CDs from a third party, the version may be older and MEPIS does not receive any part of the payment.

Q5. I already have SimplyMEPIS, do I need to get the latest updated version?

A5. Probably not. You can update an installation with Synaptic or apt-get.
However, if you were unable to install a previous version of SimplyMEPIS or if some hardware didn't work, a newer CD may work better.

Q6. Does MEPIS disable features or cripple the MEPIS downloads or CDs?

A6. No. That is a technique used in MS-Windows. We don't do that here. The CD and download products are fully functional.

Q7. Are users required to register?

A7. No. It is a MEPIS policy that registration is not necessary. However some businesses and government entities have a policy that all software used in the workplace must be purchased.

Q8. Why should an individual donate to MEPIS or buy merchandise?

A8. A donation is a way to demonstrate one's satisfaction with MEPIS. The income helps MEPIS to pay for services and buy equipment that lead to improvements in MEPIS Linux. In a free market economy, if you use a product and want to be able to continue using it in the future, you should pay a fair amount for that product, either by making purchases or donations.

Q9. Is MEPIS Linux on a Live-CD like Knoppix or is it a fully featured installable version of Linux?

A9. The MEPIS bootable CD is both. It boots into Linux like a Live-CD and then you use the acclaimed MEPIS Installation utility to install it on a hard drive.

Q10. To download applications, is it necessary to subscribe?

A10. No. That is not required. MEPIS Linux includes the applications most commonly desired by users. Additional application software is available for free download from the MEPIS and in many cases from the Ubuntu or Debian global package pools.

A subscription gives you early access to new versions of MEPIS Linux, it helps pay for our servers and for the time we spend packaging additional software for your use, and it helps support the development of newer versions of MEPIS Linux.

Q11. Do you ship to ___________?

A11. When you buy a shippable item, you will be required to select the country where you are located. If your country is not on the pulldown list, then MEPIS cannot ship to that country. You can visit the Shipping By Country page for more information on available shipping methods.

Your ship to address must be in the same country as your credit card billing address.

Some countries have been removed from our list due to a high degree of credit card fraud or unreliable delivery service.

Q12. How long should it take for my order to arrive?

Usually it takes 1-3 business day to process the order and 2 or 3 days for shipping in the US or 5 to 7 days for shipping to other countries.
If you pay by Paypal, check, Paypal echeck or by money order, your order will not ship until the payment clears.

Q13. What should I do if I lose my download info? Pay twice? Don't receive my CDs?

A13. Click here to contact the MEPIS Store and explain your problem. Please include some identifying info so your order can be located.

Q14. Is MEPIS setup to sell to the US Government?

A14. MEPIS has been assigned CAGE# 3G0T0.
For small purchases, credit card is preferred.
