This one contained a lot of information that was useful to me - especially about my HDA audio card. Thanks.

Should the podcast be added to digg? My opinion is yes, but only after an improvement in audio quality is made to put the best foot forward for Mepis.

Audio is not bad
I'm used to a lot worse -- at work I listen to very scratchy conference calls almost every day.

There were times I had to strain to understand mmelbert, and Warren sounds very guttural, so there is room for significant improvement. However, keep them coming under any circumstnces, as the content trumps any sound criticism.

I think a member's post in the past with the idea of recording both sides of the telephone conversation seperately, and then bring the two audio files together, is a great idea that should work perfectly, which my past experience with working with audio files lead me to believe.
This is easily achieved with audacity. The quality would be great as it would be as good as doing any recording with a microphone (i.e. eliminates phone noise problem).
As an example, in my Introduction to Linux Training Video, in the Playing CD's menu item, at about 1 min 25 sec in, you here me speaking and then a song starts playing in amarok. This was achieved by using that method of joining two seperate audio files in audacity.
How this works in audacity, is you open two seperate audio files. Then you can use the slider feature to move one to the left or right to synchronize with the other, then save as a new audio file.
This would result in a very cheap alternative that is very high quality. I use a Logitech usb headset that works in Linux that cost about $40. USB is good for two reasons as I was told:
1) it is digital so no analog to digital conversion is necessary
2) thers is less noise (than you would otherwise pick up by going through the sound card/computer noise)
So I see no reason why the sound quality can't be as good as in my video, which actually is even better in the raw recorded format, as converting to file sizes for the web compromises quality in favour of file sizes.
I'm very busy right now at work (working night and day -creating our new Budget on a tight deadline) but within a couple weeks I would like to do a sample recording using my method (recording a telephone conversation using a mic at each end and joining in audacity).

probably a better idea to use Skype and just grab the audio from there.

I don't think the phones are the biggest problem, it sounds like the recording is too "hot" meaning the input level is too high and if your looking at a meter it will show the audio in the red area. Just a suggestion.
using SimplyMEPIS 6.5

That's my impression too, the input level is too high, when Matt speaks softer the sound quality is better.
