Running With my Eyes Wide Shut...

OK. Some o-y'all have already seen this:

The Beryl 3D integration is ready for testing. Here are some brief instructions for getting started. Visit the forums to get guidance and to share your experiences with others.

Run Settings>Appearance>Splash Screen and set your ksplash to None, then, with Synaptic, install a new package, mepis-beryl. If you have never tried beryl before, you will also need to install the beryl and emerald packages. If you have been experimenting with beryl, delete any custom launcher files and the .beryl and .emerald directories in your home directory. Then logout and in the login GUI you will find a new option in Sessions called KDE with 3D, select this and login.

Do NOT run BerylManager, except as an experiment. It does not play well with KDE. The Aquamarine decorator also does not play well with KDE.

Have fun! Impress your friends! Spread the word!

Warren

...but I just saw it, and got to thinking to myself in a very Winnie-the-Pooh sort of way on this very blustery day.

"Self", I said, "I have no idea what graphics card this laptop is sporting...just like would be the situation with most folks 'round these-here-parts, and I'm-a gettin' bored! I wanna install sumptin fun."

After a long argument, we went-ahead and did exactly as Warren told us to do, above.

Wish us luck, 'cause we're at the part that says to logout.

As expected...

OK. As expected, it didn't work-out very well. Everything ended up as a very low contrast white. Not all that usable, and no surprise since this laptop is about 5 years old.

Oh well...At least I have the .debs cached to try on another system later tonight.

Which I think I won't bother with, seeing as Warren just announced that beta 7 is going up the wire tonight.

I'll wget beta 7 and give that a spin on a spare partition on my bedroom machine.

My occupation?
Well, computer geek-stuff, mostly. I could tell you all about it; but, then I would have to delete you.

KDE Switch User error fixed

When using the "Switch User" command on KDE while running Beryl, when you try to switch back to a session that was previously running, you will get a blank screen that doesn't let you do anything. The fix for this is to set the "Sync to Vblank" option on the general options tab in the Beryl-Settings manager to off. The default is set to on which should probably be changed in MEPIS due to the default use of KDE. You can read more about it here:
